Did that shadow just move? Naw, it couldn’t have moved. Its just a shadow.

shadow monkeysEver since I published my poem about Shadow Monkeys, I have had several people ask me what IS a shadow monkey. After thinking about it long and hard, I have come to the conclusion that … I don’t really know. Some people think shadow monkeys are evil spirits or demons that move in the shadows. Other people think more along the lines of imp or sprite. The basic belief is that shadow monkeys are some type of paranormal beings that stick to the shadows and have been know to cause mischief.

Ever thought you saw movement out of the corner of your eye but when you turn to look, there is nothing there? But as soon as you look away, you catch the movement again! Ever noticed a strange shadow, looked around for the source of the shadow but couldn’t find anything that might make the shadow, and looked at the shadow again only to have it disappear? Ever had something come up missing – such as keys, wallet, phone – and you look all over the house, only to find it sitting in a place you know that you have already checked a couple times. There is no way that you overlooked it sitting right there in the open! You must be losing your mind because there is no way that it just ~poof~ appeared out of thin air … right? Nope. Chances are that you had a shadow monkey playing with you.

peter-pan-shadowOne of the best ways I know of to describe what a shadow monkey is – think of the cartoon “Peter Pan” and the part where Peter is chasing his shadow. Peter’s shadow had a life and mind of its own and behaved in a mischievous manor. That is basically what a shadow monkey is. A playful yet harmless shadow that moves independently of other shadows.
