The Orange Light

old school houseJust a few years after I graduated from high school, I was babysitting my cousins while my aunt and uncle were working. Part of the time I would go up and spend the night and other times I would go in the early morning hours around 3 or 4 a.m., depending on what shifts my aunt and uncle were working. At the time, my aunt and uncle lived way back in the boonies of Madison County (Arkansas) on County Road #6341. On the road is an old school house that used to be part of the Good Luck community. It was on those early morning trips that I encountered an unexplainable light after passing the old schoolhouse.

It was really dark on the road the first time I saw the light. There was no moon and I couldn’t see the stars because of the thick trees along the dirt road. I was driving fairly slow, watching for wildlife, when I noticed a bright reddish-orange ball of light behind me. My first thought was that it was someone on a motorcycle coming up behind me. Then I got to thinking about it and realized that the light was probably 10 to 15 feet off of the ground, so I don’t think it could be from any vehicle. After a little less than a mile, the light disappeared. I didn’t really think about the experience much … until it happened again a couple of weeks later. The light appeared after I passed the old schoolhouse and it disappeared a little less than a mile down the road.

The light it put off was bright enough to light up the trees around it but not bright enough to light up the top of the trees above it or the road below. The ball of light was around the size of a small basketball and the light pulsed, getting brighter and dimmer at random. I tried stopping to see if the light would get closer but it stayed around 20 feet behind my car. One time I tried backing up to see if I could get closer to the light but as soon as I started moving backwards, the light disappeared.

I saw the ball of light around a dozen times before I stopped babysitting my cousins and I never could explain what it was. It did not depend on the phase of the moon since it appeared during all phases of the moon cycle. I wasn’t seeing a yard light since it stayed the same distance behind me even going around corners. The light also was not dependent on time since some mornings it would be closer to 2 a.m. and other mornings it was closer to 5 a.m. when I would be traveling that road.
